When the system is first started, the Panopto software asks to change the security settings on the Mac in order to be able to record videos. To do this, click on the appropriate button:

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (17)

The operating system will then prompt you to exit Panopto, otherwise the adjustments will not be made. Please confirm this process.

Then please tick Panopto in the window that appears.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (18)

Then start the software again from your desktop/dock.

Now you can make various settings: select the storage location and the name of the video (1), select a video source (2), e.g. B. a webcam, and an audio source, z. B. the microphone of a headset. You can also record the sound of the computer by ticking the box. Depending on what you want to record, you can add secondary sources. If you are recording a PowerPoint/Keynote presentation, you should click on “PowerPoint or Keynote recording” (3). Then Panopto automatically uses all the headings of your presentation as the table of contents of the video. In addition, all PowerPoint texts can be searched later. The primary sources (e.g. computer desktop or individual applications) are displayed in Preview (3.).

Under "Secondary Sources" (4), select other sources to film screen activities (so-called screencast). Depending on which devices are connected, other sources can also be selected (4).

When you have made all adjustments, start the recording using the "Record" button (5).

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (19)

To stop recording, press the Option + Command + S function key.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (20)

Before you start recording, you can minimize the recorder and start recording with the Option + Command + R function key. This procedure has the advantage that you will have to edit or cut less later. Likewise, you can use Option + Command + P to pause the recording.

After recording, you need to start the process of uploading the video to Panopto. To do this, click on the "Upload" button. Alternatively, you can discard the recording and record a new video.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (21)

The upload process then starts. Once uploaded, the video is available in Panopto for approval and editing after an editing/conversion period.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (22)

Further setting options are available via Panopto -> Preferences. Here the recording quality can be set exactly, which influences the data volume of the recording. As a rule (Webcam + PowerPoint) the standard setting is sufficient. You can use higher quality levels for animated and moving content.

How do I record a video with Panopto Web Recorder?

    • Note: Panopto Web Recorder (Panopto Capture) is supported by the latest versions of: Chrome, Edge (Chromium-based) or Firefox browsers on Windows 10, macOS 10.15 or later or the latest ChromeOS.

Make sure your preferred browser has antivirus exceptions for audio (microphone), video (webcam) and screen.

With Panopto Capture you can quickly start and perform simple screen recordings with a microphone in the browser without having to use Panopto for Windows or Panopto for macOS. In general, however, we recommend using the Panopto software, as it offers more functions (especially webcast/live streaming, more configuration options). The web recorder is therefore more suitable for:

      • short presentations (less than 30 minutes),
      • Video feedback to individuals or groups of people and
      • quick "ad-hoc" records for information or notices.

Open your browser (see above) and log in to Panopto - you need creator rights in at least one folder to use it. You can obtain these via approvals from other users or via our support at panopto-support@uni-kassel.de

Click "Create" at the top of the window and select "Panopto Capture". Panopto's web recorder will now open in a new window.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (25)

First select an audio source for your recording using the microphone symbol in the upper area. You can use the deflection to check whether a signal is present.

Now select (if desired) a camera source using the camera symbol in the upper area, which will later be displayed in a small view at the bottom right of the video during the recording. If multiple sources are selected, the additional sources will also be included. You can later switch back and forth between these in the Panopto viewer. Sources can be removed again by clicking on the "X".

After processing is complete, the video can be deleted locally (a) and it can be taken offline again (b), this means that it still exists locally but is deleted from the server. The recording can also be continued with the recorder (c). The access rights can be changed with "Release" (d). "Edit" (e) takes you to the Panopto editing mode, which you can use to edit your videos e.g. B. You can use View (f) to call up the video. You may need to enlarge the window to see all options (3.).

      (Source: https://www.thm.de/zekoll/daszentrum/zekoll/e-learning/tools-und-satzscenarien/panopto.html, visited on March 27th, 2020)

If you call up the video with "View" (page 6, f), it will be displayed in a new tab in your browser.
If you have made a PowerPoint recording, the headings of your slides will automatically appear as a table of contents (1.). In addition, the slides are displayed below the screen video (2.)

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (36)

      (Source: https://www.thm.de/zekoll/daszentrum/zekoll/e-learning/tools-und-satzscenarien/panopto.html, visited on March 27th, 2020)

You can use the table of contents and the displayed slides to jump to a specific point in the video. The view of the video sources is variable (3.). You can switch between the video sources and thus optionally e.g. For example, zoom in on the web cam image or slides, or maximize the display of a single video source.
In addition to the table of contents, Panopto offers the possibility to search the content of a video (a). This applies not only to texts in PowerPoint presentations, but also to the recorded language.
You can add personal or public notes (b). The notes are then publicly readable for all authorized users.
You can set personal bookmarks in the video (c) or write a discussion post (d). Your comment is then visible to all authorized users.

(Video) Using Panopto to record Videos and Lectures
  • Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (37)

    How do I unblock videos?

    • If you

        • have made a recording with the Panopto Recorder or the Web Recorder or
        • have uploaded an already existing video into the system

and you have filed this in the corresponding folder of the associated Moodle course, the video will automatically be made available to the students when using the Moodle block.

If you don't use the Panopto block, you can add a video to the course using the Panopto button in the text editor in Moodle.

These two methods are described in the following points of the guide.

If you click on "Settings" for the corresponding video, you will be offered several options.

      You can watch the video:

        • make visible immediately after recording or
        • only make visible after approval by you (in order to make edits if necessary) or
        • make time-controlled visible. Here you can set a start and end date for the visibility of the video or
        • never make visible.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (38)

If you didn't set this preference when creating a video, the system defaults to "upon publisher approval." SheAfter transcoding, you will then receive an automatically generated e-mail from the system asking you to release the corresponding video.

This step is deliberately carried out by the system to enable you as the teacher to check the video again before the viewers (e.g. students of the course) can see it and, if necessary, make changes to the video with the help of the editor (see next point) to be able to carry out.

To approve, please click the link below in the email you received:

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (39)

You then have to log into the system with your UniAccount in the usual way.

Once this has been done, the overview page for the corresponding video appears. There you can release the video by clicking on "Approve" or, if necessary, edit it again (see next point).

How do I edit a video?

    • After you have clicked on "Edit" for the respective video, a new window will open.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (42)

There you can edit your recording (sound, image sections or the table of contents and slides):

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (43)

Under "Add description" (green frame) is the table of contents that is derived from your presentation (e.g. PowerPoint) that you have recorded. Depending on how your presentation is formatted, the headings are already recognizable here. If not, click on the relevant topic/heading. Then go to "Edit" so you can rename it:

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (44)

In the blue marked area (below) you can view the timeline and your presentation. In the area highlighted in yellow directly above the time scale, you can cut your recording as you wish by clicking on the "Scissors" icon.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (45)

The area highlighted in gray on the image below shows what exactly you are cutting in a given time scale:

Click with the mouse pointer on the video line (careful - do not select the topmost 'primary stream' here), hold and drag the mouse until two grippers appear.

You can then fine-tune the grippers.

If you only want to edit a secondary stream, you can select and cut it individually by directly clicking on the secondary stream.

How do I connect a Moodle course to Panopto to serve videos?

    • First, log in to the Moodle system at the University of Kassel as usual. Now go to the Moodle course you want to connect to Panopto to provide videos in the course. Here you first call up the editing menu for the course and select "Turn on editing".

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (50)

      (Video) Panopto Recordings with PowerPoint

Now you will find the "Add block" menu in the right sidebar. Click on "Add" here and scroll down until "Panopto" appears and select it.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (51)

The Panopto block is now added to the Moodle course. In order to be connected to Panopto, the course must still be "provisioned". To do this, click on “Provision course / Make course available” in the panopto block.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (52)

This will be confirmed to you in the following window, where you can click on "Back to course" to return to the Moodle course. From this point on, videos that are stored in the corresponding Panopto folder can be accessed via the moodle course.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (53)

In this state, the block now displays the following:

      • Scheduled or ongoing live broadcasts (1);
      • Completed videos/recordings available (2);
      • "CourseSettings" (3) - here you can go directly to the settings of the corresponding folder in the video content management system Panopto.

The Panopto user interface that is then displayed is explained in one of the previous points.

Note: Videos from "My Folder" and its subfolders should not be released, since you have to confirm each individual access manually! In Panopto, move the videos to the provisioned Moodle course folder accordingly.

You can also select an existing folder from the tree structure in the panopto block from which to serve the videos. To do this, first click on the "gear wheel" in the Panopto block and then on "Configure Panopto".

In the window that opens, you can now specify an existing folder as the "video source folder" for the corresponding moodle course.

Click on "Save changes" to return to the course.

IMPORTANT: If you have changed the source folder, please check whether the videos in this folder all have the release setting: "Specific people", since the rights management for the videos is now completely taken over by moodle.

ALTERNATIVE: In Panopto you can also move the videos from an existing folder to the newly provisioned folder of the Moodle course. The procedure is described in more detail under "How do I change the storage location of a video/move a video".

  • Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (54)

How can I embed a panopto video in moodle using the panopto button?

    • You can embed Panopto videos anywhere in the course that has a text box. Text fields can be added at the desired place in the course by clicking on "Add material or activity" in edit mode and selecting a text field here.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (55)

In the text editor that appears, click the green Panopto button.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (56)

A window opens with the menu "Select" (a), "Upload" (b) and "Record" (c). The panopto folder of the Moodle course is preset as the destination for your video (1).

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (57)

A video already stored in the Panopto folder of the Moodle course can be selected under "Select". But you can also select a different panopto folder (1). This has the advantage that videos stored in Panopto can be used for different Moodle courses. A video in the selected folder is selected with a tick and integrated into the Moodle course with the "Insert" button.

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (58)

Alternatively, a video can be uploaded from your computer under "Upload" - click in the gray selection area (1). After it is uploaded and processed in Panopto (2), it can be integrated into the Moodle course with the "Insert" button (3).

Panopto - Streaming, recording, video editing and delivery (59)

Or you can record a new video as described in "How do I record a video with the Panopto recorder".
